Faces by Kenya McDonald We are the faces of many women Recognize us? We wear glasses, head wraps, red lip stick, and chocolate kisses Our heads are adorned in yellow sunshine, corn rolls, bandu, wet ends, streaks, synthetic curls or locs We are the faces of many women! We protect the nation, hold up picket signs, bend in prayer, make sacrifices and sometimes suffer in silence. We are the faces of many women! baking banana bread, making a mean Canja de Galinha , pica pollo, or fried bananas! We speak fluent creole, potent Spanish verbs, a little patois, south of the Louisiana border! We are the faces of many women! We spin children from our wombs, carry briefcases, direct traffic, drive buses, juggle tiger cubs, and create hope in a sometimes-hopeless world. We are the faces of many women Recognize us? We are Mama Dukes, Madea, Mami, Senorita, Senora, Madame, sassy sexy praying mantis, twirling in our slit dresses, tight lined silhouettes, blue jeans, leather bustier, and padded bras. We are beautiful women! Beautiful women! beautiful women from Africa, from the Americas, from the Caribbean blue sea, from Latino countries, from Asia, and the snow capes of Europe. We are faces splendidly fashioned by God!
