Portrait of a Waxwing by Lores Denison

Portrait of a Waxwing
by Lores Denison
The waxwing knows
just where to find
the best berries,
returning each
winter with her family.

I wonder if
she prefers them
in the summer,
sun-warmed, gushing
gooey down her throat.

Does she prefer
them frost-glazed - crisp,
satisfying
crunch of frozen
membranes giving way to her beak?

Perhaps these she
swallows whole for
the mere thought of
biting into
one gives her a beakache?

Do they pile
up like frozen
pearls in her
belly? Does she
gobble them up anyway?

Does she lament
the necessity of survival?

Hear Lores Denison recite the poem on the Viewless Wings Poetry Podcast:

Lores Denison wrote her first book about a family of kittens when she was eight. Since then, she has published poetry in Pensworth and Deep Overstock literary journals. When she’s not writing in a cafe, she can usually be found traipsing about the woods somewhere.
