thank god for thanking god by Esteban Allard-Valdivieso

thank god for thanking god
by Esteban Allard-Valdivieso

stand up
& every so often
remember to check in
with every aching temple
with every jasmine flower ruined
with every breath filled
in smoke
& seed
& loss.

give the wind a name
& send it on its way encouraged—
do not lift up the world
but release it scattering into the fields
like dandelions
or music—

stand up &
gives thanks for the worry
thanks for the doubt
thanks for the heartbreak
for they have helped
find a way out of all this mess
& into our own tender arms.

so stand up & give thanks to
the not working out, thanks to the
too late, thanks to every blank page unfilled
the dusty trail, the fallen grace, the hunger
this is what we sing to
not every curtain closed but
every window thrown wide open
& thank god for thanking god for this:
when we are out in the wilderness
the wild will still pour out of us.
