DUBLIN, CA–The inaugural Viewless Wings Poetry and Pizza Open Mic, held at Patxi’s Pizza (Dublin) on Wed. Aug 18, featured twenty local poets, ten artists from the Dublin Arts Collective, and filled Patxi Pizza’s outdoor patio. The event was hosted and organized by James Morehead, Poet Laureate of Dublin, California.
The event was a celebration of poetry in all its forms – from free version to traditional forms, from Haikus to rap. There were pre-teen poets, retirees and everything in-between. The event demonstrated that poetry is widely written, read and enjoyed. One crowd-favorite 65 year-old open mic’er had never performed his poetry in public before, and that’s ultimately the point of open mic’s – to provide a safe space for poets at all experience levels to share their work.
“Poetry open mics provide a unique opportunity for new voices to have a platform, and for the community to hear poetry in all its diverse forms,” said James Morehead. “As Poet Laureate I’m planning to bring poetry into the community through a variety of events and partnerships, with the City, local businesses and the Dublin Unified School District.”
Poetry will be on-stage again at the Splatter Festival 2021 Side Yard Stage, on Saturday September 18. Contact dublinpoetlaureate@gmail.com to be considered for the event.
The event also featured ten artists from the Dublin Arts Collective, the artwork providing a beautiful backdrop to the event.
